Pavement Ants can be found throughout Ontario, and are common tiny house invaders. Pavement ants have a two node petiole, pair of spines on thorax, and groves on head and thorax. Pavement ants are small ants about 1.5 to 3.5mm long and dark brown to black in color. The name for this ant comes from its habit of nesting under sidewalks and driveways and piling dirt removed from the nest in a mound on top of the pavement.
The queen is usually about 8mm long and lays her eggs that eventually become adults.
Development time for the pavement ant ranges from 36 to 63 days. The workers maintain and defend the nest and care for the young. Winged reproductive individuals are usually seen outside the nest in summer months but may emerge anytime inside including during the winter months. It is not uncommon for this swarming to last up to several weeks. In the fall and winter, nests may be found in homes or buildings near a heat source.
Pavement ants feed on almost anything including insects, honeydew, seeds, plant sap, meat, grease, sweets, household foods and they love kitchen crumbs. Pavement ants easily find their way into your house looking for food. They can be seen on counters, around the trash can or in your walls themselves. Worker ants may forage for food up to 30 feet from the colony and readily set up trails to and from food sources.
Control of pavement ants should begin with an attempt to locate the nest site. Inside buildings, nests are found within wall voids, attic insulation, beneath toilets and water heaters. Pavement ant colonies living inside your home, cottage or building should be treated by a pest control professional.
