Foundation Ants
Foundation Ants can be found throughout Ontario. These ants are between 3.0 to 4.5 mm in length and are a medium red, brown, yellow in color. The ants themselves can be found among leaf litter, underground, or in your foundation and therefore are rarely seen.
In the summer or late fall as winter approaches, mixed colonies of winged swarmers and wingless worker ants move toward buildings and try to enter through cracks or gaps in the foundation. They can enter your home, cottage, or building even the smallest crack or crevice. The temporary indoor, winter nest is usually somewhere in the basement under a loose brick or board or in a crack in the wall or floor.
