Little Black Ants can be found throughout Ontario. This ant gets its name from its very small size and jet black coloration. These are the common house ants which nest in your walls, masonry, soil and rotted wood. They feed on sweets, oil, fruits, meats, vegetables, honeydew and kitchen crumbs. Workers are about 1.5 to 3mm long, slender, shiny black or dark brown with two nodes in the petiole and 12 segmented antennae with a three segmented club.
They look very similar to Pharaoh ants, but little black ants are black instead of being yellowish to reddish. The little black ant’s stinger is small and weak so bites are not a major concern. They forage in trails which can commonly be seen on foundation walls or anywhere throughout your home, cottage or buildings.
