Canada has approximately 100 species of ants, the most common are: Carpenter Ants, Pharaoh Ants, Odorous Ants, Foundation Ants, Pavement Ants and Acrobat Ants. Most Ant species will build their nests in soil; however, some nest in areas that come into direct contact with humans, this is when ants become pests. Some common areas include: beneath concrete slabs, near foundations, under rocks or in wood; or in any location inside your home, cottage, resort or business.
There are several kinds of ants that may occur in and around the home ranging in size from about 2mm to 20mm long and colored yellowish, light brown and reddish-brown, brownish-black or jet black. Like other insects, ant bodies are divided into head, thorax, and abdomen. Ants also have a constriction between the thorax and abdomen that gives them a "pinched-waist" appearance. The constricted part of the abdomen is called the pedicel, and the fat, main part of the abdomen is called the gaster. To help identify ants, they are grouped into "one node" and "two node" ants. The "nodes" are an important identification characteristic.
Once we have determined your ants key features, size, color, other body characteristics, habits, and other information; final identification is made. It is important to identify the type of ant so that we are able to determine the proper treatment; as ant species can differ widely in their food requirements and behaviors.
